//Doctors at Tamil Nadu’s Trichy government hospital, who had the unenviable task of ‘extracting’ gold from nine people who had swallowed 2.7kg of the metal in a bid to smuggle it into the country, found that granny’s cure was the one that finally worked. The nine, who arrived from Malaysia three days ago, were fed large quantities of bananas after medication failed. The gold was finally recovered on Thursday morning. The nine people, all of them from southern Tamil Nadu, arrived at Trichy international airport from Malaysia on a Malindo Air flight and had swallowed the gold biscuits. The gold, worth Rs 70 lakh, was lying in their bellies. Airport intelligence did not suspect the travellers and they managed to pass the security check. But one of them got nervous and was picked up for interrogation. The passengers were were admitted to the convict ward at the government hospital and put under observation. Doctors said it was the first time such a case had been brought to them. They were first fed heavy food to empty their bellies. Scans were taken constantly to check the location of the gold in their bodies. Doctors also tried laxatives and emetics but it was finally the bananas that did the job. As many as 89 biscuits were recovered from them. On Wednesday night, police recovered 70 gold biscuits and another 19 on Thursday. The suspects have been booked for smuggling.// Shashi Bhushan, Zainab Imtiyaz
