** Dont Stop Short of the Finish Line! ** When Edith was in high school, she was an impressive long-distance runner. She was fast, had endurance and nobody could compete with her. Edith attended a tiny school in the middle of rural Alabama in the 1930s, and although she had never traveled, after winning the conference championships, Edith was invited to run in the state championships in Birmingham. When the time came for Edith’s event, she ran her typically strong race. Coming around the last corner of the final lap, Edith had her usual commanding lead over the rest of the field. But as Edith approached the finish line, she encountered an obstruction she had never experienced in any of her previous races. Astonishingly, Edith came to a screeching halt. Never having seen a tape stretched across the finish line, Edith just stood there and stared at it as the second-place runner caught up with her and broke through the tape to take the blue ribbon. Edith lost. She was definitely the fastest high school runner in the state of Alabama that day. But just shy of her greatest achievement, Edith gave up because an unexpected obstacle caused her to quit running just one foot short of the finish line. Dont stop short of the finish line.
