Dont buy...adopt! Rascals story. Have you ever bought a puppy from a breeder? Did you see a sign on the side of the road saying Puppies for Sale? Did you find an ad in the newspaper? or on Craigslist? Did you go to the breeders house to pick out or pick up your puppy? Did you meet the parents of the litter? Did you ask any questions about the age or the health of the parents? Did the breeder show you where the breeding dogs are housed? As you were getting ready to leave with your new puppy, did the breeder say to you Why dont you take that dog over there ... were done with him ... hes not breeding right any more? And what would you do if you were horrified by what you saw at the place? Well ... one brave, compassionate woman had this exact experience and she DID take the castoff breeder dog because she was concerned about what might happen to him if she didnt. And guess what ... this sweet little 4.9 pound boy, about 5 years old, had teeth that were rotting out, a completely infected jawbone from extensive, long-term infections in his mouth, wonky knees, and a significant heart murmur. So was the heart murmur caused by the dental infections? or is it a genetic defect that could be passed along to his puppies? Will his puppies have a genetic predisposition to wonky knees? This sweet little fella is all about loves and snuggles ... and food. His name is Rascal and he has now had extensive dental work, will be on antibiotics for all the infection for another week or so, and he will be on heart medication for the rest of his life ... which may be another 10 years or more. But thanks to the wonderful person who rescued him from the breeder who didnt care whether he lived or died, he will now live a long and happy life. AAMR was happy to take him in and get the vet care he needed and now he needs to find a new forever family who will love him and take good care of him. He will be available for adoption in about 10 days. Not all breeders are bad. But the ones who are should be shut down. And with that, I will step down off my soapbox ... for today.
