***EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PROGRAMME JOHANNESBURG *** Imām an-Nasaʿi (raḥimahullāh) and others have reported that the Noble Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam), once speaking of Sayyidunā Shurayḥ al-Ḥaḍramī (raḍiyalāhu ʿanhu), observed: “That is a man who does not make a pillow of the Qur’an.” Though this was an observation of praise for Sayyidunā Shurayḥ (raḍiyalāhu ʿanhu), who would spend his nights in recitation of the Noble Qur’an rather than soundly asleep, the Prophetic Miracle of succinct expression equated the preference of sleep over the Qur’an as though one had made a pillow of it! The distinguishing trait of our pious forbears, unlike us, lay in their commitment to realise the very essence and spirit of religious teachings and Prophetic statements, as opposed to sufficing on fulfilling their surface value, as we often tend to do. Hence we find that many Imams whom we deeply revere, such as Imām Abū Ḥanīfa, Imām al-Shāfiʿī and many others (raḥimaḥumullāh) throughout our history, when they heard of the Noble Messenger’s (ṣallallāhu ʿalaihi wasallam) admiration of this virtue, vowed never again to take the Noble Qur’an as a pillow. Consequently, it became entirely ordinary for them to complete the Qur’an at least once every night. Rabīʿ (raḥimahullāh), the student of Imām al-Shāfiʿī (raḥimahullāh) reports: Shāfiʿī (raḥimahullāh) would complete the Qur’an thirty times each month and sixty times in the month of Ramaḍān, and this was apart from what he would recite in Salah. Yaḥyā b. Aktham (raḥimahullāh) said: I accompanied Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ (raḥimahullāh) in residence as well as in travel. He would fast daily and completed the Qur’an every night. Abū Bakr b. al-ʿAyyāsh (raḥimahullāh) once said to his sister: ‘Do you see that corner of that house? Your brother has completed the Noble Qur’an in that corner eighteen thousand times. ʿAbdullāh b. Idrīs (raḥimahullāh) once told his daughter: Do not weep over me, for I have concluded the Qur’an in this house four thousand times. Similarly, al-Mughīra b. al-Ḥakam (raḥimahullāh) would complete the Qur’an daily. Abū ʿAbbās b. ʿAṭāʾ once told Abū Jaʿfar: ‘It is my punctual routine to complete the Qur’an once daily, and at least thrice daily during Ramaḍān.’ Al-ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib was also known to complete one Qur’an daily and al-Buwaiṭī would fast everyday and complete one Qur’an daily. This is just a small selection of what has been reported from our pious forbears regarding their extreme attachment with the Noble Qur’an. They would not be at ease until they had recited it completely every single day. The question we ought to ask ourselves when we read of their connection with the Qur’an is: How do we compare with them? How far off we have come from their way? How much have our unruly desires altered the very essence and meaning of religious duty? After a honest assessment of ourselves, we must then trace our steps back to the understanding of our noble predecessors regarding religion, and then follow in their footsteps and abide by their understanding of faith and its practices, so that it becomes possible for us to make any claim of association with them. It is with this purpose and towards achieving this objective that we will gather in the blessed company of our Hazrat Shaikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Yusuf Motala (DB) to revive this Sunnah of our pious predecessors and to try to complete the Qur’an at least once in one sitting, in the hope that this will bring us closer to making a habit of this practice and strengthen our connection with the Book of Allah Almighty. All brothers are kindly invited to seize this unique opportunity and avail themselves of the immense blessings by attending themselves as well as encouraging family members and friends to participate. May Allah grant us the ability to work towards His Pleasure.
