[Elephant Poachers Have a New Problem: U.S. Marines] Twelve years ago Zakouma National Park in Chad was home to an estimated 4,300 elephants. Today that number is fewer than 500... Six of the park rangers charged with protecting them were murdered by poachers in 2012, and violent skirmishes continue. / Now the elephants and the rangers have a new ally. A team of (16) U.S. Marines recently conducted a month-long training session in Chad, where they taught 101 newly recruited park rangers important tactics that can help in the fight against poachers and wildlife traffickers... news.yahoo/elephant-poachers-problem-u-marines-135420882.html This is one of the best conceivable uses of the military of any country ever, short of the actual deployment of soldiers in the field to directly conduct anti-poaching work, which would be even more effective IMO. This is to safeguard the wildlife treasure and resource (for, say, ecotourism, NOT for hunting) of a nation. I dont see why the direct field application of the military in anti-poaching is all that inconceivable. Kudos to these Marines.
