*** Eli Lilly Visits Alhuda Foundation This Ramadan *** Ramadan, the 9th month in the Islamic Calendar was observed this year between July 9 and Aug 7. Muslims all over the world await this month with much anticipation and take advantage of this blessed month. It is a time not just to fast & pray but to better oneself as a human being. But what about those who have chronic health conditions like diabetes? Allah does not wish to put us in difficulty and out of His mercy he has excused the sick, the pregnant and the elderly. But there are many diabetic Muslims who do not want to miss the blessings of Ramadan and want to take part in the fasting as well. Eli Lilly, a major producer of Insulin visited Alhuda foundation this Ramadan and made a documentary about Diabetes and Ramadan. The film focuses on Brother Shami (Mohammad Saifuddin), who is diabetic and how he manages his diabetes along with fasting in Ramadan. They visited Brother Shami’s house and also filmed him playing racket ball at the gym. Lilly also interviewed Brother Shaker Rashid, interim Imam of Alhuda Foundation and Principal of Eman School and Dr. Ahmed Jebawi, an Endocrinologist. Both of them shared that fasting in Ramadan is generally not recommended for diabetic patients but many of them still insist on fasting. Patients with Type 1 diabetes, uncontrolled diabetes or with frequent low blood sugar levels cannot fast and can get the same reward by feeding a poor person for each fast they miss. For other diabetics, like Br. Shami who can fast, it is recommended to check their glucose levels several times during the fast and only under the advice and care of a physician. The film producers from Eli Lilly captured iftaar and Taraweeh Prayers at Alhuda as well. They were amazed to see that more than 500 people come together at Alhuda each weekend in Ramadan to eat and pray together. This film was a great opportunity to share Islam with Eli Lilly and educate people about Diabetes and Fasting at the same time.
