*Emotional Post Alert * A friend of mine was telling me about her recent visit to her doctor. Her blood pressure and blood work indicated that she needed to do something. Make a change. Something. I will jump to the point of this. This doctors recommendations to her included: 1. Blood pressure medication 2. Give serious consideration to gastric bypass surgery 3. Do not exercise as this might increase your blood pressure to an unsafe level. 4. It is not safe to attempt to make a baby at this time. Calmly, I asked some questions: 1. Did the doctor refer you to a nutritionist or ask you how you feel? If you know what the cause of this is? Do you want help? What is your support system like? Do you have a support system? No. No. And No. If I was an internist, I would put so much weight into lifestyle modification and recommending a support system to discover the WHY that got her there...that there just wouldnt be another option until everything else was exhausted. But doctors cant afford to take that time anymore. Where does that leave you and me? We, and we alone, must be advocates for our own healthcare. Supporting each other in our communities. I still hear of that crap. That absolute SH*T coming out of peoples mouths as they mock the fat guy trying to eat right or exercise. The family member who is trying to do right by their family and buy healthy options, only to be hijacked by opposing ignorant family members. Surgery, pills, and more. They make a lot of money for the infrastructure of this country. We can not do this alone. Look to your left. Look to your right. If you see someone that is struggling or depressed or angry or scorned or lonely.... Instead of agreeing w them and thinking that your lending ear is the right thing because you are there for them.... Create a SOLUTION together! Take steps towards progress. We can do it. I know we can.
