..."Enough is as good as a bad meal".... The problem for me with Diane Francis’ thinking – and that of her ilk – like Steven Harper and compnay - is that she wants to leave out of her pursuit of profit equation all cultural, moral and ethical concerns - believing - if not in theory, then in practise - that the pursuit of wealth is, or ought to be above the democratic process and the law. – If you can’t make the pursuit of wealth above the law, then gaining sufficient power to force a change in the law becomes this small percentage of individual’s priority. “That’s what friends are for.” Apparently, this is all done in the name of “the better good” - ignoring – (the question is never asked of them) what the wee people think is “the better good”. In an ideal Diane Francis / Steven Harper world there would be no democratic process to slow them down or stop them from their – in my opinion – small minded, short sighted and self centered pursut of - at any cost - wealth. Who said, for example, that factory workers in the developing world are better off for having given up – or having had taken from them - their plot of farm land in exchange for factory jobs or a business career. That is being presumptuous isn’t it? Isn’t it????!!!!!!.….”To be a people one must have a history, to have a history one must have a land. The challenge is to embody history in a daily life”. - Martin Buber - …So, what’s wrong with farming? Why are Diane Francis and her friends so distainful of farmers? Doesn’t EVERYONE need a piece of real estate!!! Why shouln’t a hobby - a back yard garden for example, or being a tailor - knitting - be a living?
