#Ethiopia #Scotland #UnitedKingdom Last week, I indicated I want the United Kingdom to stay united. Some criticized my reasoning was solely based on the developmental assistance we get from London. Actually, that was good enough - but I can add more. Several people argued it time the Brits get a taste of their medicine - as they have been messing with other nations for long. But thats a short-sighted view. In the face of Islamic State (Iraq and Syria) and Boko Haram(Nigeria), the United Kingdom is a key part of the war on terror that we do not want to lose. Considering how sheepish and irrelevant the French and the Germans have become, I want the United Kingdom to maintain her role in global affairs. As the United States continues its decline, the British are a much needed force to make sure that the global power shifts gradually rather than abruptly. Whatever the track record of the Brits may be, - I believe, at this point of history - they are a balance between the trigger-happy Americans and the confused Europeans. We need them. The Brits are smart enough to notice that the Scottish referendum is a protest vote against the cruel neo-liberal order. And, I believe they will remedy it. After all - lets admit it - they managed to have a sort of democratic system for hundreds of years without having a written Constitution. It is unlikely they miss this wake-up call. At any rate, for now, the world is better off with a United Kingdom - and I hope the Scots will vote tomorrow to keep the Union [for the next decade]. [After that - after a decade, hmm... that will be a different story.]
