“Even now, so near dark, a wonderful luminosity sings. The light is so infinitely clear, so pure, it sweeps away civilization, and with it my protective mind chatter. I want to howl like a coyote. I feel the tear of my irrelevance, my life that feels so fragile and pointless sometimes. Yet with it comes a thrill of belonging to all things. Instead of reaching out to scratch the rock, I scratch my own soul. From it flows the blood of the mesa and the sky, the river and the dune, the rabbit and the antelope, the cottonwood and cactus and evening primrose blossom. I am this place. It is me. All our atoms, every breath of air we take, every leaf or child’s cheek we touch, has been part of the universe from the beginnings of forever. And atoms know no bloodlines. The plateau calls us, but it is our own voice we hear. It murmurs, Remember: Once and again, we will be sand. Once and again, we will be stars. With these words, I dip my hand in the blood-red paint of communion, and press my hand to the sandstone wall.” --Text excerpted from Journey to a Sacred Place by James Lawrence in: Muench, David: Plateau Light (Second Printing, 2011).
