“Even the God cannot save a family where woman is ill-treated.” …..a proverb of Khasi tribe of Meghalaya in India – Khasi are an indigenous or tribal people, the majority of whom live in the State of Meghalaya in north east India, with small populations in neighbouring Assam, and in parts of Bangladesh (totalling nearly 1.3 million according to 2001-census). They call themselves ‘Ki Hynñiew trep’, which means the seven huts in the Khasi dialect. The main crops produced by the Khasi people living in hills of northeast India, are betel leaf, areca nut and oranges. The Khasi people in the Cherrapunjee region are apt at designing and building the characteristic bridges out of live roots. In several States of India, The Khasis are a matrilineal society.
