“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” Isaiah 40:30-31. For many their gift is serving others and they serve until they give the ultimate sacrifice. Having served in the military and in law enforcement throughout my career I have many friends who are still serving either in the military, law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, nursing, and other public service departments. Sometimes because of that service they make that ultimate sacrifice, their lives, and that was never more evident this morning than when I saw on the news the loss of 19 fire fighters in Arizona battling the wild fires coming on the heels of the loss of a Hood County Police Officer shot in the line of fire a few days ago here in Texas. Additionally, too often we hear of the many men and women who still lose their lives while serving our country and we know that their families are grieving their loss. Whether we agree with their service or not, whether we agree with the choice of career or not, these losses are always a reminder to never take our loved ones for granted at any time. In these professions (as in others) many become jaded by what they see and hear on a daily basis, facing danger and uncertainty, the fear of the unknown, the fierce will to survive each shift and make it home safely to their families, and each time a fellow brother or sister fails to make it back home to their loved ones, an entire brotherhood and sisterhood grieves with their loved ones. Some are growing weary from the losses, from the stress, from the pain, and hurts of the job; others want to give up when their profession is tarnished because of one bad egg; but a good reminder is that for every one ugly incident that is splashed across the news there are 9 more great men and women going quietly about their jobs each and every day and night, serving, protecting, and in these cases, dying in furtherance of their jobs. God’s peace is with their families and friends and when they grow weary may God’s strength continue to renew then and lift them up each day. Be blessed (JJ)
