*** Experiments with my armpit bacterial community *** So I stopped using deodorants some weeks ago. No big deal, over the course of these weeks, although I sweat a lot (I drink a lot, I sweat a lot, in tropical Malaysia with continuously high temperatures - we do not use aircon or fans in the house), the smells of my armpits turned to a distinct, even nice one. Different to when I regularly used deodorant and once in a while forgot to apply it – horrible smell! After one hour. Seems like my armpit bacterial community changed from a pretty aggressive one (the species that survive the deo) to a softer one (all are now allowed to live). Reminds me of the time when I was using this cool red tartar removing toothpaste (I bought it because of the magic iridescent colours on the package) – it obviously removed too much of the protective layer on my teeth, and although they felt perfectly clean immediately after brushing, the Calcium carbonate built up so fast that I thought my mouth turned into a limestone cave. This teaches us about interference with complex systems, and disadvantageous effects when you just address one parameter.
