[FCE Obudu Joins ASUU On Solidarity Strike] ***************************** There seem to be no end in sight to the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the Academic Staff of the Federal College of Education Obudu said it has joined their counterparts nationwide on a seven-day warning strike with effect from last Monday to press home several demands to which the federal government has been turning ear. According to the public relations officer of the FCE Obudu chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Mr. Aniashie Akpanke, the decision taken at its congress was predicated on resolutions emanating from the union’s national executive council meeting in Abuja last week. In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP, Akpanke who noted that a copy of the resolutions had been forwarded to the Minister for Education, added that the seven-day strike was ignited with a peaceful procession by all members of the union in black attire around the college and some major streets in Obudu town in defiance of the heavy downpour in the area at the time of the procession. The statement reads in part: "Presenting the resolutions to the congress, the F.C.E Obudu chapter chairman of COEASU, Dr. Peter Betiang, noted that the union’s resolve to embark on a warning strike was predicated on the government’s double standard and lack of genuine commitment to resolving the enormous problems bedeviling the education sector, which manifests in the inability of the federal government to address issues of great concern, especially those pertaining to the education sector, with deserving expediency. "Accordingly, the union identified the unattended challenges which contribute to the prevailing dire situation condition in the education sector, as evident in the following spheres, among others: The attendant implication of government’s refusal to come to terms with ASUU on innocent students and the entire education sector, particularly, colleges of education which have been the most neglected of the higher education institutions. "FG’s encroachment on the core mandate of TETFUND, and the deliberate attempt to cripple its hitherto efficiency and effectiveness by the deliberate non-release of 2013 intervention and the refusal to appoint a Substantive Executive Secretary for it; The determination to impose on the colleges of education, with impunity, the obnoxious policy o Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS). "The threatening consequences of the unfunded out-sourced services on the security of the colleges of education vis-à-vis the pervading fragile national security situation; The non provision of critical infrastructure required for effective teaching-learning and the deliberate obscurity in the processes of the award of the contract of the controversial multi-media micro-teaching laboratory in the colleges of education. "The non-payment of death benefits accruable from Group Life Insurance policy, which is a direct consequence of the centralisation of the policy by the federal government. The federal-state dichotomy whic has engendered discrimination in the handling of issues of conditions of service and welfare by the various governments and even outright refusal of some state governments to implement, especially, the 65 years retirement age for academic staff, the CONPCASS and migration, among others; and the non-remittance of pension deductions to the respective Pension Funds Administrators (PFAs) by some state governments." ***************************** THE S.P.C EKSU © 2013
