***FIRE UPDATE AS OF SUNDAY, 5/18/14 - 5:30 PM*** Thank you to the many parents who have taken time to send us emails regarding the exceptional handling of Wednesday’s emergency. No matter how often our schools prepare for a natural disaster, the fires that raged through Carlsbad on May 14th were unpredictable and unprecedented. As our community begins to recover from last week’s devastating fires, we want to heap praise on our principals for their calm, yet decisive handling of the situation. Whether evacuating their campus or sheltering-in-place, students felt safe from the reassurances of teachers and support staff who knew exactly how to react to changing conditions. How befitting that this coming week May 19-23 is Teacher Appreciation Week! Be sure to let your teachers know how much they are appreciated. CUSD Families Who Have Lost Homes At this point, we are aware of 10 CUSD families (13 students in all) whose homes were damaged or lost in the fires. CUSD’s Emergency Response Coordinator Tim Evanson will be working in cooperation with the District and site PTA leadership to expedite linking the needs of each family with the appropriate support. Each case will be unique. Therefore, our hope is to coordinate efforts so that resources can be received and distributed systematically, knowing some families may need little to no support, and others may need immediate assistance now and well into the future. Returning to School Monday All schools have been deemed safe for students return to school on Monday, May 19th. Additional support staff will be hand at Poinsettia, Aviara Oaks Elementary and Aviara Oaks Middle to assist in students’ return. Make Up Days Not Required We have been informed by the County Superintendent of Schools that due to the declaration of a countywide emergency, no school districts in San Diego County will be required to make up the school closure days. Make up dates for the Advanced Placement (AP) exams will be determined and communicated to students as soon as they are scheduled. Superintendent Lovely
