© FOR HER TEDDY From Thoughts, Memories and Tears By: Peter S. Griffin As a small boy I had the privilege to observe, True love blossom and emerge.... My beautiful sister, Gail, so young and petite, Full of life, true and sweet.... Raised a few blocks from our street, A handsome lad, she did meet.... His name was Teddy, who was several years older, Dont talk to him, our Mother did scold her...! Teddy was a soldier, you see, Mother leery of what his intentions might be.... But Gail had caught Teddys eye, He fell deeply in love, of that, he wouldnt deny.... Mother granted absolutely no quarter, So very cautiously, he tried to court her.... Gail was smitten by Teddys charm and affection, Caught dating him she earned detention.... Not wanting to provoke more of Mothers wrath, Teddy decided to try a different tact.... He assured our parents, a gentleman, he’d surely be, If they could only, date occasionally.... Granted permission, they shared great times, Once Mom got to know Teddy, all was fine.... Still leery of Mom, for over six months, Gail never got a kiss, She had to beg and plead for Teddy to grant that wish...! When visiting us, he gave me gifts, Military patches, “K and C rations, he granted my wish.... Making camp with my little friends, Many campfire meals cooked at that rivers bend.... For me, Teddy became another big brother, A soldier friend like no other.... He made me feel like I was all grown up, Drinking hot coffee from a canteen cup...! After nine years’ service, he earned final his discharge, France, Germany, Iceland, he had seen the world at large.... Now his only desire was family life, Fulfilling his dream, Gail became his loving wife... Teddy and Gail remodeled a house, made it their home, Their love and happiness radiantly shown.... Sharing a love so pure and true, Their darling children numbered two.... How they cherished the lives they made, Stephanie and Rick, such joy, they gave.... Teddy loved to watch them learn and play, His family brightened all his days.... Teddy worked hard and provided well, Many a humorous story he was known to tell.... Always a smile and pleasant greeting, He offered all, upon their meeting.... Of all things, Teddy loved his family and our countrys flag, A dedicated patriot, he’d carry this love all his days.... He loved a cold beer, with veterans near, At the American Legion Hall, he held so dear.... After a day’s work he loved to lie on his personal divan, John Wayne and vintage war movies completed his plan.... Many an hour he enjoyed, passing that way, Home, hearth, wife, their children safe at play.... As Teddy grew older, his heart grew weak, Bypass surgery required or his future bleak.... With silent prayers, his family by his side, A successful outcome, a merciful God let him survive.... Stephanie grew into a beautiful young lass and married well, Grandchildren, Jackie and Allison, just lovely, I’m proud to tell.... A father and son team, Rick became Teddys best friend, On boating and fishing trips, their affections did blend.... God surely did bless this family with many graces, Well-mannered boys and pretty girls with fancy laces.... Gail always kept an immaculate home, Polished floors, brass, silver and chrome.... That successful surgery bought Teddy twelve more years, But it could not allay all Gails or family fears.... As time went by there were complications, Teddy faced each new day with love, cheer and anticipation.... He was thankful and made good the time it bought, He fought bravely but eventually his battle was lost... Teddy taught us all the love of family life, To cherish each other and do what’s right.... Atop his grave is the flag he loved so dear, It gently waves in the clean, brisk, fresh air.... Gail knows in Heaven, a celestial couch was made ready, God prepared it special, for the love of her life, just FOR HER TEDDY...! IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW, FREDERICK E. JONES
