“Failure is a perception, one in which we only believe if we have stopped trying.” ~Eri Nelson~ Ornig, a truly fantastic story. I love how your perception of what your peers would think or say did not even enter your train of thought when you were in the midst of the race. Only wishing to give your best in the face of everything… speaks volumes to your character then and now. I think many of us know the thought of defeat and I like everyone fear it daily. Although there are choices to that fear and we can choose to believe in it or thrust ourselves above it… I am a writer of various unorthodox approaches (she chuckles) and it is that in which makes writing for me fun that I am most chastised about. Trust me there have been times I had thought of packing it all up on the mere thought that I was not being perceived correctly. Until the lowest of my moments came by another authors hand…. An author to whom we had both purchased the each others books reached out to me shortly after I had reviewed her work. Her style was not bad but in all honesty, the series was not particularly of my interest. However, I wrote a nice review for as I said she had a style and skill that needed to be praised even if it was not something I would traditionally read. After I had written and posted a review that I must state was not organized by the pair of us to do on each other’s work, she wrote to me. Now, again I must say I never ask people to review my work, them simply enjoying it is usually enough for me. And it turned out with this email I never needed to worry about her reviewing my work because she told me plainly that her being a teacher in Canada that she could not do a review of my book. She said she would not give me the star rating I have been receiving up to this point and she did not want to break my ranking so opted to not review it. Although she went on to say my story line was good but she could not get past my twist to words or my choice of verb and noun usage. There was more said but I will not bore others with a over beaten point (she chuckles). For me this was a pivotal time in my career and it gave me two choices. Quit or make sure readers knew what they were getting into outside of a pretty cover ( she smirks). Therefore, I went with the latter. I changed my image so that even that stated who I was, I inscribed each book with a letter from me the author so that readers knew what they were getting, posted on all sites that held my name the same type of letter that my books carried, and every chance I get I gleam about who I am as a writer. Defeat in the face of failure is a perception that can beat down our passions. Choosing to not let it is a personal choice… Although it is not an easy choice it makes a clear presence of who we choose to be.
