Falmouth Tops Hyannis 14-3 Posted on July 6, 2014 by Colleen Loftus Colleen Loftus/Web Reporter The Commodores reeled in a tremendous win earlier tonight against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The team took Guv Fuller Field with great confidence and determination to continue their winning streak after a walk-off win against Cotuit two nights before. Starting on the mound for the Commodores was lefty Alex Young (Texas Christian). Young was credited with the win, pitching five innings and delivering four strikeouts. He allowed only one run and six hits, recording a 1.80 ERA. Jordan Minch (Purdue) pitched for the Harbor Hawks, delivering two strikeouts in three total innings of play. Hyannis struck first in the top of the third, with Falmouth responding immediately during their next at-bat to make the score 1-1. From that point forward, Falmouth appeared untouchable offensively. Sam Gillikin (Auburn), Audie Afenir (Oral Roberts), and Conor Costello (Oklahoma State) set the stage with three consecutive singles in the bottom of the fourth. Kevin Newman (Arizona) and Afenir both earned RBI’s as they popped sacrifice flies to the outfield, bringing home runners on third in the fourth and fifth innings. Falmouth led 5-1 heading into the sixth. The Commodores earned much of their success by reading the opposing pitchers well. In the bottom of the eighth, the team took their largest lead over an opponent in the 2014 season. The Commodores scored a total of eight runs in the inning, with six hits and only one error by the Harbor Hawks. Relief pitcher Cameron Tekker (Virginia) walked three consecutive Commodores batters, and then allowed four straight singles. Seven Falmouth batters earned RBI’s in the eighth as they patiently awaited their pitches, aware that many would fall outside the plate. The Commodores ended the inning ahead 14-1. Overall, Falmouth seized great opportunities offensively through great communication. Trever Morrison (Oregon State) and Afenir both set perfect bunts in the fourth inning, allowing two errors by relief pitcher Lance Thonvold (Minnesota) that advanced runners home. Newman and Afenir both hit sacrifice flies to score runners and advance teammates on base. As previously stated, the Commodores capitalized on errors made by the Harbor Hawks in the fourth, as well as one error in the eighth. The team showed much improvement as they made use of their runners on base and managed to focus their hits to holes in the infield and outfield. The team’s solid communication transfered to their defensive play. The team succeeded in holding Hyannis to one run until the top of the ninth, putting runners out batters cleanly before runners in scoring position had chances to react. The Commodores were determined to turn out quick innings in the field, retiring the Harbor Hawks in four batters or less in five of the nine innings. Steven Duggar (Clemson) particularly demonstrated his speed and agility, chasing down four speeding pop flies in right field. Catcher Afenir threw to Matt Eureste (San Jacinto) at third to catch Hyannis third baseman Austin Slater (Stanford) stealing in the top of the third. Falmouth’s relief pitchers also helped secure the Commodores’ win, each playing one full inning. Nick Cooney (Wesleyan) struck out three batters in the top of the seventh. Matt Eckelman (St. Louis) struck out back-to-back batters in the top of the eighth. While he allowed two runs in the top of the ninth, Kevin Mooney (Maryland) struck out third baseman Bobby Melley (Connecticut) swinging for the final out of the evening. The final score tallied 14-3 in favor of the Commodores. The Commodores will travel tomorrow, July 6, 2014, to face the Bourne Braves at 6:00 p.m. For more information, visit the Falmouth Commodores website at falmouthcommodores.
