‘February elections must hold’ A group of youths on Tuesday stormed the National Headquarters of the All Progressives Congress to denounce alleged attempt by the Federal Government to tinker with the date of next month’s polls. The youths, who came under the aegis of the Nigerian Youths For Credible Elections 2015, told newsmen that there was nothing on ground to justify the postponement of the February polls. They accused the President Goodluck Jonathan- led administration of plotting to abort the general elections scheduled to begin with the presidential poll on February 14. Hajia Zainab Galadima, who spoke on behalf of members of the group, said it was sad that the regime could no longer hide its alleged clandestine motives. She said members of the group became suspicious of government’s intentions after the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) suggested a shift in the date of the polls by citing the need to give time for the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards as excuse. Galadima insisted that such an excuse was not tenable for an election that was only a few weeks away. She argued that “if elections could hold in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria who are facing worse security challenges, nothing stops Nigeria from going ahead with the February elections.” “We are all stakeholders in the appalling economic situation, unemployment, poor infrastructure, poverty and declining standards of education. We don’t support violence and we would do everything to keep the peace during the elections. All we are saying is that elections should hold, we want INEC to be allowed the free hand to hold elections and we want our votes to count,” she added. While expressing optimism that INEC would cover enough grounds in the distribution of PVCs before the first round of polls, she maintained that the conduct of the elections would afford youths the opportunity of voting for the persons they considered capable of ensuring peace and progress in the country.
