-Fix your eyes on Him, not the storm!- Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 12:1-2 (NET) Over the last few weeks, the Lord has consistently been reminding me to keep my eyes fixed on Him. He took me to Matthew 14 the other day, and we re-read the story of Peter walking on the water. The Lord had invited Peter to share in His wonder, and Peter accepted the invitation. But when Peter evaluated his situation and saw the wind and waves, he almost sank. I wish that I could say that I can’t relate to Peter, but I can. The Lord invites me to share in His work, I excitedly accept, then I look at the circumstances and allow the baby tares of doubt and fear to take root. I take my eyes off of the One who initiated the work and look at the impossibility of it. However, don’t you love the Lord’s response to Peter? The text says that when Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. Immediately. I might have taken my eyes off of the Lord, but not for a moment did He take His eyes off of me. Not for a moment did His mind change about inviting me out on the water. He simply says, “Why did you doubt?” Through this, I’m learning impossible is not in my Lord’s vocabulary, and it doesn’t have to be in mine. When we keep our eyes on Him, we get to see more of who He is, and we get to not only hear but experience the truth that: Nothing will be impossible with God (Luke 1:37) The one who began a good work in you will perfect it (Philippians 1:6) Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed (Psalm 34:5) We have this treasure in jars of clay, so that the extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us (2 Corinthians 4:7) He is the one who gives me confidence (Psalm 62:5) And when these things take place, there can only be an abundance of good fruit, an abundance of evidence for the goodness and glory of God – for those in His family to relish and for those without to consider. Today, as we run the path set out for us, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, filled with confidence in Him – His heart, His ability and His unchanging nature to fulfill the plans He has for us.
