#FlashbackFriday 2008 Chris Martin has said that this song is about redemption. I think people whove lost everything or near everything and found greater joy and meaning with so much less can probably relate. When it was released, Joe Satriani filed suit against Coldplay for copyright infringement claiming Viva la Vida used substantial original portions of his song If I Could Fly. Lawyers for Coldplay argued that Satrianis song lacked the originality that enable it to lay any copyright claim to Viva la Vida. The case of eventually dropped and settled out of court, the terms of the settlement undisclosed. Heres Satrianis song: https://youtube/watch?v=FclrtPUquhQ Im inclined to think that 3-4-2 melodic progression is a somewhat common one and it does sound familiar in that tried kind of way. There is a bit where Viva la Vidas melody works with a few bars of Satrianis chord progressions, but that can also happen without plagiarism. To quote the Bible about a song that refers to it quite a bit: What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. ;) ~ Ecclesiastes 1:9 What do you think? Complete copycat, collective consciousness, or cosmic coincidence? ^- #coldplay #joesatriani
