(^^)For my FB Budo friends, a very interesting clip on Kuramoto Shihan, who has his own organization of Shukikai. He was originally with Kendokai under Nakamura Soushi. When I first arrived in Yokohama in 1984, my off duty hours were spent visiting various Dojos in the City to see which Dojo offered the environment in which I could continue to polish my skills. One such Dojo was the Kendokai Branch under Lee Shihan in Kannai. I still remember being allowed to observe the training. The training that day was more in line with Jishukeiko with the Shibucho offering individual advice. There were about three students all colored belts. One was concentrating on flexibility using rags as sliders on the Dojo floor. Another was practicing Kata. The third was practicing mawashigeri on a heavy bag. Although he had only a white belt on , it was obvious that he had practiced in karate somewhere else. I figured he was Yudansha at least. Definitely not a white belt. Anyway, his mawashigeri was sharp and powerful making the sandbag sway with each impact. The Lee Shihan told him (since this took place in 84, the exact words are not clear) to the effect that anyone can learn to kick and sway the sandbag. An effective and powerful kick will not sway the bag but rather send trembles up and down the bag....of course he demonstrated.....Hmmmmmm I could understand a super heavy bag that would not sway even if a bulldozer hit it, but it was a regular size heavy bag....When Lee Shihan kicked it, true to his words it trembled. For a young 34 yrs old shoshinsha that sight has never left my memory. OSU! (^^) Alas it class schedule did not meet my very irregular duty schedule. Perhaps Ill post some other recollections of Dojos I visited that first year in Yokohama. Some were pleasant some were not so pleasant. Oooops back to my chores.....floors vacuumed and mopped, kitchen glowing, one load of laundry almost pau...I know Im forgetting something......oh well it many come back..... youtu.be/hf-s0cPM3tI
