Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Robust GDP growth sustainable – PNoy Manila BulletinManila Bulletin – Wed, Feb 19, 2014 Share Print President Benigno Aquino III said yesterday the Philippines is firmly on the road to sustained economic growth, especially as the country hits a so-called “demographic sweet spot” in 2015. “The days that we are called the ‘sickman of Asia’ are becoming a distant memory,” Mr. Aquino told the Euromoney investment conference as he commented on the Philippines’ outlook. He cited the 7.2% gross domestic product growth last year despite a series of disasters, including Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda and the Bohol earthquake, the series of ratings upgrade last year to investment grade, a revival in manufacturing and the country’s improved competitiveness ranking by the World Economic Forum. Mr. Aquino said that the country is also looking forward to next year when it expects to reap the benefits of a demographic sweet spot, when a majority of the population will be of working age. He noted that the experience of other countries that have gone through this period like this saw a decade of growth averaging 7.3% a year. Mr. Aquino said government is also investing more on infrastructure – 400 billion pesos ($9 billion) this year from 304 billion pesos last year – and working to attract 10 million foreign tourists in 2016 from 4.7 million last year. He said three airports are now being upgraded while plans to improve 50 more airports are underway. Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima told the investment forum that the country could also gain from the peace process between Muslim rebels and the government since it could unlock the potential of the resource-rich southern region of Mindanao. He said infrastructure investments are also being spread to other areas in the country, not just Metropolitan Manila, to ensure even development. President Aquino said investment in education is also meant to ensure there is enough human capital to sustain growth. The president said bills are pending in Congress, such as the amendment to the Build-Operate-Tranfer Law, to further improve the business environment in the country. https://ph.news.yahoo/robust-gdp-growth-sustainable-pno…
