..... For those of you who have enquired why Ive weaned Wolfman at a little over 3 months old .......... Firstly, my vet is in total agreement, due to Wolfie following our usual pattern of being very well fed by his mom, Razzle, and thus more than capable of thriving away from his her. Because all my foals are of bigger breeding than their mom, Razzle, and they drink so much that it drags her down. Foals dont need their mom by this age, unless theyre not doing well, so it makes sense to wean. Razzle is now 16 and pregnant again, and Wolfies built like a tank, so I asked my vet and he agrees that theres no reason not to wean. Ive done most of mine early. Once theyre tucking into grass, they dont need their mom. Theres also always the issue of the mom feeding her baby good rich milk that causes their joints to mature too quickly, which does them harm. From another aspect, I have all of my horses fully clipped and rugged up for winter, usually in September/October, not only to keep them dry so that theyre happy and, just as importantly, their skin is kept hygienic by not getting rain scald scabs, to be outside more during the winter, but also because my arthritis makes it almost impossible for me to groom them ..... and even more difficult if theyre wet and muddy. I dont do a lot of riding due to my health, but its more achievable if I dont have to wreck my spine trying to groom a horse. Rugging up will also include Razzle and Wolfie, thus, if I dont wean early, I wouldnt be able to put Razzles rug on her for fear of Wolfie getting his head stuck in her rugs leg straps.
