~ Freedom ~ In the unconscious world of our created identity we strive for relief; relief from our wanting, though we become habituated in wanting more. Stephen Levine states it beautifully “All we have ever wanted is that which wants, free of its wanting.” The most common motivation of desire is freedom. We want to feel free to be who we want to be, do what we want to do, to have what we want to have. Freedom is what drives people in the belief that money will solve problems. If I only had enough money I would be free to choose how to spend my time. If I was single I would be free to come and go, if I found the perfect partner I would be free to love. Freedom becomes The Pie in the Sky. This can create a pendulum effect of striving to be rather than being. Once I attended a horse clinic and the girl said to the clinician, my horse doesn’t like to be with the other horses and doesn’t like to be away from them either. The teacher said with a wink, my you do have a problem don’t you? When we believe something outside us is the answer to our distress we are left in constant quandary. How much of our life is spent wishing we were somewhere else? This is a fantastic indicator to recognize that true freedom lies within our own consciousness. The ego is in constant want. We get into the habit of feeling empty, incomplete, lacking. This is purely self-created bondage provoking the need for freedom, quite the conundrum. In his book Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor E. Frankl, A survivor of the Nazi extermination camps, wrote “I understood how a man who has nothing left in this world, still may know bliss, be it only for a brief moment, in the contemplation of his Beloved.” This Man who had lost everything had gained The Only Thing that is permanent; his Freedom. He did this in his own consciousness before he was ever released. The horrendous circumstances insisted that he reach beyond the world of form, into the formless; deep within his own being. In The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle writes, “The problems of the mind cannot be solved on the level of the mind.” We cannot shift the environment enough to create a sense of freedom. Perhaps a temporary relief of what is activating our innermost fears and doubts. But true Presence, a sense of completeness must come from reclaiming our own loving nature in the here and now. The habitual world of striving can never fulfill us with the freedom we so intrinsically desire. All that is required is the awareness that striving is not the answer. That the constant search for relief is the bondage. See all that is real and lasting in your heart. Find the inner sustenance that is waiting for your attention. Practice seeing the beauty of this experience; if it is unbearable? Practice loving compassion. Give to yourself in this moment, and share that compassionate self with your loved ones. Find true freedom in what is real, and what real is not conditional. When we trust in love, we can see from our hearts, and then allow our minds the perfect function of creating our world from abundant fulfillment. Peace, Compassion, Wisdom. ~M~
