From Jane Morrison Snage: FACTS that counter Governor Snyders - TopicsExpress

From Jane Morrison Snage: FACTS that counter Governor Snyders outrageous claim of having increased funding to our public schools. From 2008 to 2012, elementary and secondary education fell by 2.30 percentage points, or 7.8 percent, as a share of the budget. During the same period, Medicaid spending rose by nearly four percentage points, or 17.6 percent, as a share of the budget. The table below details changes in expenditures from 2008 to 2012.[7][9][10][11][12] Figures are rendered as percents, indicating the share of the total budget spent per category. And, if you look a little deeper you will see that the biggest chunk of this DROP occurred after Snyder took office. _______________________________________ Jane: Thanks for the article BUT if you look closely there is a serious flaw in using the dates that are being claimed here as Governor Snyder’s Responsibility. Clearly the years between 2008 and 2012 covered the budgets developed by the Granholm administration and passed by the Legislature seated during that period of time. Historically Jennifer Granholm’s first term ran from January 1, 2003 through 2007. Her Second term ran from January 1, 2007 through 2011. Her final budget was submitted and passed by the legislature and covered Governor Snyder’s first year in office in 2012. So if you want to lay blame (and believe me I am no fan of this Governor by any means) you must provide proof that he damaged education during the years of 2013 and 2014. If he is defeated in November then the next governor will inherit his final budget that covers 2015 Dave Cleveland 10-4-2014 ______________________________________________ From Jane: I havent looked at all the data...but I DO know that there are more districts in our state in dire financial difficulty since he has taken over. I DO know he supports DeVos idea of charters/vouchers without the same level of transparency as public schools....The per pupil allowance is less....and the types of cuts made due to the cuts are detrimental to our kids. (art, music, p,e., and media specialists ) There is so much deception it is hard to sort out. ________________________________________________ I have no doubt that is true HOWEVER we must remember that at LEAST a huge cause of schools financial problems rest with corporations closing plants and factories all over the state causing huge losses in property taxes as well as over 800,000 people who left the state for friendlier economic climates and job also causing huge losses in property and income tax revenue. These are conditions caused by corporations, wall street, bankers and the real estate industries and cannot be blamed on local government. As for supporting charter schools and the vouchering of other social programs... THAT alone is reason enough to vote the man out of office. _________________________________________________ From Jane: Right...and that he is a liar. Not interested in RTW...voted on it. He is, in my opinion, another Koch bros. puppet. Privatize everything (look at aramack-horrible)....big bonuses to his buddies, furniture contract to his cousin....so sick of it. Then the vote to stop EFMs, and they ignore the voice of the people of this state and do it anyway, Taxing our retirement has been a huge loss to us....and what they do to educators..horrible. Happening in many states...so sad for our kids. _________________________________________________ Jane: I dont disagree with anything said above, he is an absolute liar, a KOCH puppet and not a friend of education. BUT Snyder was only responsible for the budgets HIS administration developed and passed on to the legislature. I would also like to know how Mr. Synder proves that Snyder really did cut 1 billion dollars from education. He has been very quiet on this subject and has offer little if anything to back up his repeated statement on this subject. That may hurt him in the election. Maybe we will get answers to that at the upcoming town hall at Wayne State University Dave Cleveland 10-4-2014 _______________________________________________
