GENESIS 15:1-6 1After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. 2 But Abram said, Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir. 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir. 5 He took him outside and said, Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them. Then he said to him, So shall your offspring be. 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. --------------------------------------- SCRIPTURE REFLECTION In Genesis 12 God tells Abram to uproot his family and enter the land He has promised him. God promises to make Abram’s family a great nation in order to bless all the peoples of the earth. Abram’s hope in God’s promise wanes as years pass without a child. God reaffirms his promise by telling Abram he will have a son. Abram has a son and his family grows into a great nation, but God’s vision of blessing all the nations remains. Ultimately, God’s promise to Abram is fulfilled in Jesus just as his promise to Eve was fulfilled. On Christmas day a child was born who was, and continues to be, a blessing to all the people of the world. --------------------------------------- PRAYER God, hope in you does not disappoint. You promised a child to bless the whole earth and you have remained faithful to that promise. By grace, your story of blessing has worked itself through the course of human history and has found its climax in Jesus. Thank you that the promises of old rang out on Christmas day and now echo in my life. Thank you for the blessing of Jesus.
