“GMO proponents claim that people have been eating GMO foods in the United States for 16 years without ill effects. But this is an anecdotal, scientifically untenable assertion, as no epidemiological studies to look at GMO food effects on the general population have ever been conducted. Peer-reviewed studies have found harmful effects on the health of laboratory and livestock animals fed GMOs. Effects include toxic and allergenic effects and altered nutritional value. GMO foods are not properly tested for human safety before they are released for sale. The only published studies that have directly tested the safety of GMO foods for human consumption found potential problems but were not followed up.”
