🌹GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN 🌹 Victims of canine fatalities (including all breeds) occurring on this date of January 17, between 2005-2015 Kara Hartrich - died 01/17/14 - age 4, female - Bloomington, IL. Kara was attacked and killed by 2 of 3 of her familys pit bulls while she was being babysat by her grandmother in her home. The grandmother sustained serious injuries to her face while attempting to protect Kara and her younger sister from the attacking dogs. Sadly, Karas death occurred on her 4th birthday. Please see the comments section of this thread for a very moving interview with Karas mother after the tragedy. Charges: None; dogs were owned by victims family. Johnny Wilson - died 01/17/10 - age 55, male - Chicago, IL Johnny was mauled and killed by his daughters 6 pit bulls in her home. The daughter, who was a breeder, stated that she had never had any previous trouble with any of the dogs. However, her father was discovered with severe head trauma, both ears severed, and one eye horribly mutilated. Charges: None; dog belonged to victims family. Justin Mozer - died 01/17/08 - age 6 weeks, male - Lexington, KY Justin was attacked and killed by the family dog while in the care of his aunt and uncle, while the baby was napping on the bed. The uncle reports that the death was caused by the familys Jack Russell Terrrier and not the family pit bull. It should be noted that in the 25 year period leading up to this tragic incident, Jack Russell Terriers were responsible for only 2 attacks on humans doing serious bodily harm, with one death attributable to the wound getting infected rather than trauma itself. Pit bulls, during the same period of time, were responsible for 1194 serious attacks on humans, resulting in 116 deaths, and 654 maimings. The family requested BOTH dogs be removed from the home following this incident. Also worth noting, this fatality is counted against the JRT in statistics, not the pit bull. You can draw your own conclusions but well stick with the official JRT version for consistency with media reports. Charges: Unknown Pictured: Victim, Kara Hartrich.
