. Genesis 4:3-7 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” God accepts Abel’s offering, but rejects Cain’s offering. We can guess at exactly why this was, but it certainly had something to do with Cain’s heart. Cain’s heart is found “not right” before the Lord, and he has a choice of how he will respond to the news. Sin has been crouching at the door of Cain’s heart, even as he brought the offering to God. This is no secret to God, and God calls it like it is. In this moment, Cain’s heart must turn toward God. His response though is not repentance, humility, or surrender…his response is anger and sadness. We must choose how we will respond to our relationship with God. Will we adjust our own position and align ourselves with Him, or will we rebel against the cost of being in relationship with Him? God has set His terms in Christ Jesus, and we come to God on His terms, not on our own. Verse/Commentary courtesy of Verse-A-Day app. verse-a-day/Apps
