“Give us quality football!” – Supporters’ message to PSL After watching 2014 World Cup inspiring football it is normal that SA fans raise their expectations for much BETTER QUALITY club football in the PSL. It’s happening all over the world and SA cannot be an exception. Supporters and media’s negative reactions after the mediocrity of Carling Cup should be taken seriously by the PSL. For some years now there is a decline in quality standards while the competitive aspects – physicality, aggression/tackles and tactical pragmatism – have become increasingly dominant in SA football. As supporters have quickly learned that only CONSISTENTLY DISPLAYED QUALITY FOOTBALL can deliver CONSISTENT RESULTS, they are no longer prepared to compromise. The big problem is that to improve on quality we need to have QUALITY PLAYERS and QUALITY TRAINING. On the issue of having more quality players, the hope is that the youth development will soon start to produce higher grade players. However, even if the quality of players improves we still have to face the predicament of incorrect and outdated training methods. It has been repeatedly mentioned that the TYPOLOGY of SA players with particular aspects such as creative mind, average/small body frame, physical reactivity/effort capacity profile, etc., technical superiority and tactical limitations, IMPOSES a SPECIFIC TRAINING METHODOLOGY in order to ACHIEVE THE BEST. As it is now, training in SA clubs is still COPYCAT of conventional training used in other countries where it suits the profile of those respective players. It is like trying to improve the scoring ability by practicing weight-lifting and long-distance running. For as long as the training mentality and solutions do not change to make room for highly effective COMPLEX-SPECIFICITY methods the QUALITY OF SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL CANNOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL POTENTIAL OF LOCAL PLAYERS. The hope is that the upcoming COACHING SYMPOSIUM in August will address this capital challenge.
