~God’s Seismic Manifestations~ Earthquakes are convulsions of the earth’s surface due to underground faults or volcanic action; a quaking or shaking, waving movement over a wide area – rapidly, continuously to and fro and downward. They may extend for a mile or two to more than 30 miles. They are ominous and can be terribly devastating. Jeremiah 4:24 tells us they cause the hills to move and the mountains to tremble. Psalm 18:7 reveals they are sometimes signs of God’s wrath. In Numbers 16:31-33, when a Levite named Korah and his followers rebelled against Moses and Aaron, God caused the earth to open and swallow them up, with their families and all of their possessions. Earthquakes can trigger tsunamis, such as the horrible one that struck more than a dozen countries in 2004, killing 230,000 people. A tremendous earthquake occurred at the moment of Jesus’ death. Matthew 27:51-53 tells us “And at once the curtain of the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep in death were raised [to life]; And coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many people” (Amplified). Also an earthquake heralded His resurrection: “Suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord came down from Heaven and rolled aside the stone and sat on it” (Matthew 28:2 TLB). In Acts 16:25 God used a mighty earthquake to deliver Paul and Silas from prison. But perhaps the ultimate one will occur when Jesus comes back with His saints to establish His kingdom on earth. “That day his feet will stand upon the Mount of Olives, to the east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will split apart, making a very wide valley running from east to west, for half the mountain will move toward the north and half toward the south” (Zechariah 14:4 TLB). Yes, there have always been earthquakes, but we know they’re increasing in frequency and intensity. Jesus warned His disciples in Luke 21:11 of things that will happen before He comes back: “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven” (KJV). But He also told them not to be troubled. And we pray in agreement with the beloved disciple/apostle John, “He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20 KJV). Amen.
