“Government Shutdown 18 years later” It was mid November 1995. I was in Washington, DC, at a conference for ING and USLICO. Our home office was in Arlington. It so happened that this was the same week that Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and President Clinton shut down government over budget disagreements – just like we’re having today. My flight out of DC back home was scheduled for early Monday morning. So, a colleague and I spent Sunday touring Washington, DC, when we were approached by a PAC member and we were asked a series of questions. We revealed that we were certified financial planners on a conference visit. Then the PAC member invited us into the press conference at the Capital building, where we met then Senator John Boehner of Ohio, who is the Speaker of the House today. We began to talk. Then John Kasich, Governor of Ohio, showed up and entered the conversation. Then the Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich showed up. Speaker Gingrich invited us up to his office for coffee to continue the conversation. My colleague and I accepted Mr. Gingrich’s invitation and went upstairs into the Speaker’s office. For the next two hours, we talked freely with Newt Gingrich, as we sat on the balcony located in the dome of the Capital building overlooking DC. At that time, I was a member of the Custer Hill Golf Course in Fort Riley, and I was wearing a logoed jacket. Newt Gingrich recognized it and knew the golf course very well. We had quite a conversation about a 30 foot tall cottonwood tree on the 15th hole. Newt was the one that informed me that that tree’s name was “Ike’s Tree,” named after President Eisenhower. The only difference between then and now is that now John Boehner is the Speaker of the House and Barack Obama is the President but we still have no balanced budget, we’ve had an economic crash, trillions of dollars in bail-outs, and a deficit that’s being reported at $17 trillion (economists report it is actually $90+ trillion). My conclusion is that they need to be fired. They haven’t learned a thing and they haven’t improved on a thing. We are actually trillions of times in worse shape. After 18 years. THIS SYSTEM HAS PROVEN IT IS A COMPLETE FAILURE. How many times have we heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result?!
