#GrandparentsTravelerTip #15 THE OLD CATHEDRAL OF MANAGUA During the beginning of the century most of Managua was built using adobe construction, however, the creation of the cathedral meant implementing new building techniques and materials, and as such, started the modernization of the capital. Construction began in 1927 and fortunately no damage was sustained during the 1931 earthquake wich gave a glimmer of hope and strength to then devastated citizen. The Cathedral was inaugurated in 1941 with the wedding of the daughter of Anastasio Somoza García, dictator at the time. The earthquake of 1972, with the epicenter in the heart of downtown Managua, still did not bring down the cathedral, though it was condemmed afterwards because of the damage it had sustained.
