#HAILAKANDI: The Hailakandi unit of the Silchar- Lumding Broadgauge Implementation Movement Committee has called for a 12- hour Barak Valley bandh from 5 am on September 24. The committee has called the bandh to press for the early completion of the ongoing Silchar-Lumding broadgauge conversion works. Various organisations of the valley have already extended their support to the bandh. Talking to this correspondent, the convenor of the committee in Hailakandi district, Sushil Paul said that at least 30 organisations have extended support to the bandh. Some of these organisations are the Bar Association, Citizens’ Right Protection Committee, Northeast Nadwatut Tamir, Railway Passengers’ Protection Committee, Jamat- e-Islami Hind, Aam Aadmi Party, Hailakandi Press Club, District e-Media Association, SS College Students’ Union, CPI, Rotary Club, Assam State Employees’ Federation, Majuri Shramik Union, Karmachari Parishad, etc. Paul alleged that the gauge conversion works from Silchar to Lumding via Badarpur started 17 years back, but till date the project has not been completed and there is no certainty regarding its completion. He said that the elected representatives and Railway authorities have been giving only assurances that the works would be finished soon, but this has not materialised yet. Paul urged the people, irrespective of their identities, to come forward to work for the fulfilment of this long- standing demand. He alleged that a section of corrupt political leaders and a transport lobby are against the completion of this mega project of the Barak Valley
