As was all too often the case, I’d be walking with my goth pals and some goon mobile would drive by and we’d all get an earful of, “Hey, it ain’t Halloween ‘til October!” Alas, Halloween comes but once a year, during which time the children of the night are spared such tomfoolery and can truly be themselves and at peace with the world. At this time monikers such as “Morticia” and “Dracula” become terms of endearment rather than mean-spirited epithets, and everyone can join in the undead, zombified fun of a holiday that celebrates death, decay and all things morbid. And in a world haunted by myriad and all too real horrors, it provides a much-needed relief value to take stock of one’s own mortality and embrace the things which frighten us most. But whereas the average working stiff only allows himself this guilty pleasure during the Halloween season, the goths hold communion with the Grim Reaper all year round. And when All Hallows’ Eve has come and gone, it’s time to crawl back into their coffins and shut out the daylight world of corporate vampires, worker zombies, and government ax-murderers.
