#HIRING: @ESPN - Interactive Web Developer II - New York, NY FiveThirtyEight is seeking an Interactive Web Developer to join our data visualization team. The Interactive Web Developer will use information design and web development to help readers explore and understand the data behind the news. Responsibilities • The Interactive Web Developer will pitch, edit, report, prototype, design and develop static and interactive graphics, visualizations, maps, databases and web applications. • The Interactive Web Developer will help conceptualize FiveThirtyEight’s approach to and style for displaying data on the web. • The Interactive Web Developer will work in tandem with other members of FiveThirtyEight’s editorial team to help lead enterprise-length features, models and stories, which have a strong visual or computational component. • The Interactive Web Developer will create reusable tools to generate charts and graphics. Basic Qualifications • Strong news judgment, a solid understanding of current events, and a background in information design or news graphics • Expertise with front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and data visualization libraries (Raphael, D3, Processing, WebGL) • Experience with a modern, dynamic programming language (Python, Ruby) and web development framework (Django, Rails) • Experience with statistical programming languages including R • Demonstrated execution of a clean, elegant, and sophisticated aesthetic; an ability to visualize complex ideas in a clear, accurate, and intelligent manner. • Extraordinary attention to accuracy and detail. • Experience with many aspects of data-oriented journalism, including traditional reporting, writing and data analysis. • At least 2 years experience developing interactive graphics and news applications for a widely read news Web site.
