(Halifax, N.S.) Premier Darrell Dexter today compared the NDP’s four year surplus with the Liberal plan for unethical deficits, saying the Liberal deficits would pose a fresh risk to services for families and seniors. “The NDP had a plan to balance the budget and together with Nova Scotians that plan worked. Having a balanced budget underpins everything you are going to do as a government. With a balanced budget the NDP is now able to fund insulin pumps for kids and build more long-term care beds for seniors,” said Dexter. Under the NDP the province has a cumulative surplus of $42 million and has expanded services that will make a positive difference for families and seniors. Before the election Stephen McNeil was outraged over deficits and debt saying, “We can’t continue to grow it at the rate it has been.” (The Chronicle Herald News, Tuesday, August 20, 2013, p. A7) “In this election campaign Stephen McNeil has said a Liberal government will not keep the budget balanced, instead he will run years of deficits and drive up the debt. What happened to make him change his tune on deficits and debt?” asked the NDP leader. “A balanced budget helped the province earn the best credit rating ever. It has also created a secure business environment that allows more entrepreneurs to open new small businesses that create good jobs here at home. Stephen McNeil would put all that at risk and take the province back to cuts, closures and job losses. It’s a risk families can’t afford to take.” The NDP will: deliver better health care where and when people need it, fight for good jobs and stronger communities, keep the HST off home energy and take it off more family essentials, give our kids a better start, stand up for seniors, build the Maritime Link and keep the budget balanced to protect services for families. Election day is Tuesday, October 8.
