# Have a Question?, We Have an ANSWER. QUESTION (unedited) by Lekhandu Thungon : It is nice to know that Rev. Tulku Guru Rimpoche has been again entrusted with the duty of Abbot of Tawang monastery. His service in the capacity of Abbot will definitely benefit the people of Monyul region. However, we are confused about the procedure of selection of Abbot at Tawang Monastery. Can anyone , please tell us ? Is Tawang Monastery under the control of exile Govt. of Tibet ? Or does it belong to Gelukpa sect ? The above article has created confusion regarding the ownership /administrative control of Tawang monastery. ANSWER by Tawang Times : By virtue of the ‘Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’ based at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh all Geluk Monasteries around the globe seeks to be affiliated under the office. On consultation only, decisions are made by the office on behalf of a Monastery. As far as I know, advices are given after following complicated religious rituals, researches and observing social factors. However no advice by the office is bonding or compelling. All Geluks (in the present day, even of other sects like Nyingma and Khagyu) solicit advice from the OHHDL on major decisions makings - like nomination of an Abbot, for that matter anointment of a Lama/Rimpoche. For Buddhist around the world the advice/decision by the office is considered righteous and unequivocal. On the other hand, advice is also sort from the office to obtain the ‘stamp’ of ‘credibility’ or for the purpose of affiliation. Answering your questions... 1) No, the CTA ( Central Tibetan Administration /Tibetan Govt. in Exile) does not controlled Tawang Monastery. It’s just that the Tawang Monastery like other Geluk Monasteries consider the office (OHHDL) as its advisory head. Just because all major decisions of Roman Catholic Churches around the world are made by the Pope’s office in Vatican City... it doesn’t mean that a church in India is controlled by the Govt. of Vatican City/or the Pope’s office. 2) Traditionally the Tawang Monastery is a Geluk Monastery.
