“He Has Done Great Things for Me!” We trust that you and your family have enjoyed your Christmas season. Every year it seems to be a mix of crazy and calm, busy and still. Somehow in the middle of all the family traditions, we hope you’ve discovered a few quiet moments to spend with both Giver and Gift—Jesus. Before we move into our new year, we’ll look at one more component of the Christmas story. It’s the encounter between two family members. One is young and has just experienced an angelic messenger to proclaim the ultimate “mission from God.” The other is an old cousin or aunt who now bears a miracle baby of her own. There’s a greeting and then the baby somersaults in Elizabeth’s womb and a rush of God’s Spirit saturates her being. She shouts for joy, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” Soon the praises burst from Mary as she declares how God has given her, a lowly servant, great favor. The story is all about possibility. With God, barren places are opportunities for new life and impossibilities are fertile ground for the miraculous.
