(Hello, again!) -- Part Two of Charlies 1/3/15 Message to You: It seems that many people have already discovered my new address! Ah, the powers of the internet! I have gotten so many letters that it has actually made my transition easier. Other prisoners see the stacks of mail I’ve gotten and must think that I’m a likeable guy, that I’m okay. Nobody who gets that much mail could be a scoundrel, they must think. Of course, your letters always lift me up and give me an outlet! Changing prisons is definitely not like changing apartments. You cannot get away from your neighbors, especially in an open bay (with 12 beds in one room). Meeting your neighbors in prison is not like meeting them in society, either. You are not welcomed with pies and coffee. At the worst, you have to convince people you don’t know that you won’t be messed with. Changing prisons can be like coming to prison for the first time, except you’re more aware of the games that are played and how to stop them. That being said, my move has not been traumatic. No fights and no additional “hole time.” Hopefully, it will stay that way. No two prisons are the same. ‘Different staff, different inmates, different setup. When you transfer, you discover how your new prison is both better and worse than the last one. One great thing about this prison is their educational department. They have no problem proctoring my exams and even have a separate room for that. With that and access to a (running) track, I will be okay. I am reading Across the River and into the Trees by Ernest Hemingway now. In it, the Colonel tells Renata that most of the stories he has about war would bore her. I fear that prison isn’t much different. It’s not like you see on TV. Thank God for that. However, I will continue to keep you up to date with boring (hopefully) postings and poems. Happy New Year!
