*** How To Hire For A Role That Doesnt Exist By: James Caan From time to time when you are involved in the recruiting process, an exceptional individual will come along that really stands out from the rest of the pack. It is normally during the first meeting when you can just tell you have an outstanding candidate with the charisma, drive and passion to really make a difference to your business. But what can be frustrating is when that exceptional individual does not have the necessary skills and experience needed for the role you are looking to fill. Sometimes, particularly in the early days of a business, you may need somebody with a very specific set of skills and if the candidate does not have these then many hiring managers look elsewhere. But I like to do things a little differently. If I have found somebody that has the right characteristics, I will always try and find a role or a space for them within one of my businesses. The very best and the most talented individuals can come from any walk of life and from any background. Experience and qualifications are of course hugely important and should always be taken into account, but sometimes it helps to look beyond these. What can really make all the difference is a person’s character and the strength of their personality. A few years ago there was an individual who came to my office and wanted to work for me. He had no real experience within the field we operate, but his passion and determination set him apart from most people I have met. I have said before that ambitious companies look to attract like-minded individuals and he was certainly one of them. Ultimately I realised he could make a real difference to what we do, so I got thinking about where he could slot into my organisation. There was no obvious vacancy, but I created one especially for him and today he is one of the key senior figures within Hamilton Bradshaw. I take this approach a few times a year, because I believe it is important not to let your business become stale. Dont be restricted by whether or not you are advertising for a job. You should always be looking to get on board people that can drive the organisation forward. Committed, ambitious people who can think for themselves are absolutely priceless, so as long as it is not harming your business in any way, there is nothing wrong with creating a new role.
