“How can you betray your own people?” “Are you the Palestinian’s Vidkun Quisling? Once in a while, I encounter comments that read, “Don’t trust her—she’s betraying her own people and she’ll betray you as well.” Good evening, it’s Anett. Are the Palestinians “my people?” Why do you want to connect me to these crazy individuals? What’s the connection between me and the murderers of the Fogel family or the terrorists who firebombed the car little Ayala was riding in last week? Yes, I realize it’s easy to generalize. Its natural for a nation that’s been persecuted for thousands of years. But when someone comes along and utters the words of Ruth, “Your people are my people and your God my God” not necessarily in the religious sense but one of linking my destiny to yours; in the sense of loving the Jewish people, please don’t discount someone like that. I ask you to place your hope in true coexistence—not one based on giving up land or freeing murderers God forbid but one based on striving to achieve common goals and being grateful and giving back to the society we live in. Accept those who want to live side-by-side with you and come down hard on those who wish for your demise.
