“How can you frighten a man whose hunger is not only in his own cramped stomach but in the wretched bellies of his children? You cant scare him — he has known a fear beyond every other.” — John Steinbeck. The family in this photo is unidentified but they’re very reminiscent of the family in the movie, “The Grapes of Wrath.” It was quite common for grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins and children, to be all living under one roof. It may be for only a couple of months or last a long time. People needed help during hard times so they moved in with family members until they got back on their feet. There were no social programs to catch them.
