“How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who - TopicsExpress

“How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart” (Jer. 23:26). What a bizarre and horrible paradox, that there are “lying prophets” (נִבְּאֵי שַׁקֶר) who imagine they are hearing from God when they are actually speaking vanity and untruth...Therefore the first step of true prophecy is not the resolution to speak for God as much as it is the decision to stop deceiving oneself (Gal 6:3; 1 Cor. 8:2). We must first accept the truth about who we really are and be conscious of the sickness of our hearts (Jer. 17:9; Isa. 6:5): Only then can we account for our need before heaven and find healing. If we should forget these things, we risk re-encountering our own inner depravity – a hard grace given to those God calls his own... We can hear the voice for truth in our lives only if we are willing to be honest with ourselves...Be not wise in your own conceits (Rom. 12:16).
