How to Avoid Foods Made With Genetically Modified Organisms The unsavory truth is that you have a 75 percent chance of picking food made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) at the supermarket, because at least seven out of every 10 items have been genetically modified! It’s not impossible, however, to make wise, non-GMO food buys. And there may be more non-GMO options than you think. Tips for Avoiding GMO Crops Tip #1. Buy Organic! Stick to products labeled “100% organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients.” Tip #2. Go For Non-GMO Labels. Look for labels with “Non-GMO” or the spelled-out “Made without Genetically Modified Ingredients” version. Products may also carry the Non-GMO Project Seal, which has third-party verification in its compliance of Non-GMO Project standards. Tip #3. Say No to At-Risk Ingredients. Avoid products made with any of the “Big Four” GM crops: corn, soybeans, canola, and cottonseed. Tip #4. Consult books and online resources on GMOs. Read Jeffrey Smith’s Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods. Other useful resources provide a comprehensive list of non-GMO products, including this Non-GMO Shopping Guide.
