* Hypocrisy Much? Oops, I forgot this was politics * ~ Abhijit The biggest news right now is the Delhi election, and more specifically, the Kiran Bedi - Arvind Kejriwal contest. AAPs Arvind Kejriwal has issued multiple challenges to BJPs Kiran Bedi to participate in a public debate about their vision and governance plans for Delhi. I personally believe this debate would be a progressive step. After all, democracy is intertwined with dialogue. It is therefore surprising to see the BJPs Kiran Bedi shying away from such a debate. None of the excuses provided by BJP and Kiran Bedi seem to make sense. Excuse # 1 - We believe in doing, not debating Why it makes no sense - On 15 Aug 2013, Narendra Modi had openly challenged the then Prime MInister Dr Manmohan Singh to a debate on governance. If debate was a good idea then, how can it suddenly become a bad idea now? Excuse # 2 - Kiran Bedi does not have enough time as the elections are due soon and she needs to cover a lot of constituencies. Why it makes no sense - Over the last one week, Kiran Bedi has appeared for dozens of TV interviews. Most of these interviews were pretty harmless, and she was able to convince the mellow anchor and audience (lets not talk about what happened on Times Now, lets not embarrass anyone here). So as per her logic, sitting for long interviews is good use of time but sitting for a debate isnt? Excuse # 3 - We do not believe in personality clashes - India is a party-based parliamentary democracy. Why it makes no sense - Abki Baar, Modi Sarkar. Enough said. * * * Hypocrisy runs in the blood of our political class across the world. Its a shame that our nation is no different.
