“I am nothing without Jesus.” This is perhaps the Christian - TopicsExpress

“I am nothing without Jesus.” This is perhaps the Christian equivalent of Buddha’s Enlightenment: the closer the believer reaches this realization, to a state of nothingness, the more enlightened / spiritual he or she is. There is of course a stark contrast between Buddhism’s nothingness and the Christian counterpart. Whereas Buddhism’s realization involves meditation and self-discovery, the Christian version is perverse; it starts with a degradation of the human being. The human being, according to Christian teaching, is born as a hopeless convict, in need of redemption. Here two verses (of many) that are central to Christian teaching. “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned…” (Rom. 5:12 NIV) And “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:5 NIV). First, a human being is guilty of other’s people’s “crimes.” Leaving aside the fairness of the charge and its grotesque character, is it sane? Second, this kind of message harbors a sense of hatred of humans as well as a self-hatred. Yet, ladies and gentlemen, I want to submit before you that this kind of insanity and misanthropy has been perpetuated in the West for over 2 millennia by one of the most respected and supported institutions in our planet, Christianity. Happy Easter!
