...I dont know why MALEFICENT exists. Not that Im against the basic idea, that the premise couldnt work and have something subverted and meaningful to say...Im just not sure it does. The point is to give SLEEPING BEAUTY added context to make the villain sympathetic, but Im not sure Disney can get away with saying they did when the film deviates so far from its source material it essentially tells a different story, not a different aspect of the original. I suppose thats an argument for another day. As it is, its a pretty film that gets more out of its visuals than its director can get out of its performances, and thats a darned shame, as that might have saved the film from itself in the end. Its not horrible, but it loses points with me when it seemingly loses touch with its own intentions and forgets a lot of the things that makes the original film good in order to do it.
