I heard Narendra Modis UN speech on youtube and felt that Indias position on some pressing national and international issues could have been communicated more effectively and clearly, had the PM chosen to speak in English. He is not a native speaker of Hindi, so he mispronounces a few Hindi words ( e.g. such words as prakriti and smriddhi as prakruti and smruddhi respectively), so what is the problem if he does not speak flawless English in impeccable accent? Some one should also advise our PM that it is not a good idea to use dictionary-style speech at an international forum where simultaneous interpretation of his speech is available. In his speech he used both Hindi words and their English meaning, for instance, avasar, opportunity, garima, dignity and samriddhi, prosperity. There was also no need for him to say main jab yah baat kahtaa hoon to saaf kartaa hoon ki har desh kee ek philosophy hotee hai (When I say this , I wish to clarify that every country has its own philosophy), because this is an inane comment that an Indian politician may well make at public rallies in Muzaffarpur and Muzaffarnagar, but it would be deemed as banal at an august gathering..Membrs of the UN General Assembly understand this point very well, so every precious moment available to the PM should have been used thriftily in stating his vision and views. And one more point-- alliteration in classical poetry may have served some purpose, it does not, however, have any place in the PMs speech. But unfortunately Sri Narendra Modi used it profusely, as is evident in the line samudra, cyberspace sath sath sajhaa, struggle which did not impress me.
